Education isn’t just what happens in the classroom and on campus. Colleges are placing greater emphasis on the value of real world experience. Internships are a valuable piece of the education puzzle. At Farm Bureau, we recognize how important internships are for the student, and we have structured the 80-10-10 program to maximize your internship with us.
What is 80-10-10?
At Farm Bureau, we consider this our Formula for Success. When you intern with us, we want you to get a taste for our culture and the job you could be doing after you graduate. For 80% of the time, you will spend it immersed in hands-on activities for your team. For 10 percent of the time, you will be working in other areas of your broader business unit, and for the remaining 10 percent of your time, you will be doing shared activities with other interns, and networking with company leaders.
Why is this Approach Successful?
Through this formula, you will have a solid understanding of what your job might look like if you pursue a career in insurance after you graduate. You will have real-life work experience that will help you build a resume with skills and accomplishments that you can share with future employers. You will also develop a broad understanding of the other roles on your team. For example, an intern in the Claims department may work in Express Claims, but could shadow other areas in their division like claim file audit, subrogation, and develop an understanding of the division and how everyone works together.
The Importance of Networking
Your internship is really your time to shine! When you intern with Farm Bureau, you have a unique opportunity to network with leaders in the insurance industry. You’ll find that these people are not only innovators in their field, but that they are open to sharing their knowledge with you. These professionals are at every level of the organization, and are eager to help you learn and grow. Upon graduation, you may find that these people will help you network with other industry professionals and help you secure a job offer. The connections you make are invaluable!
