Caring for Elderly

Although it may seem unlikely now, chances are you may need to care for an aging parent or other loved one. While no one wants to lose their sense of independence, as people mature there are often things they become unable to do on their own. When that time comes, keep the lines of communication open as you discuss options for their future care.

Some signs that may indicate your loved one needs assistance are:

Sudden weight loss
Failure to take medication or overdosing
Burns, falls or injury marks
General forgetfulness and disorientation
Extreme suspiciousness or atypical behavior
Deterioration of personal habits

Be prepared when you meet with doctors by having lists of all questions, symptoms and medications. If the doctor recommends alternative care, identify all the options and resources available, and include your aging parent or loved one in the decision-making process.

It’s also important to keep informed about your aging parent or loved one’s financial situation, health status and changing needs. Know the location of important documents, accounts and insurance policies.

If they have long-term care insurance or an estate preservation program in place, you will need to keep that in mind as you make decisions for the future. To help document this important information, ask a Farm Bureau agent for a copy of the Personal Journal of Wishes and Records®.

Through all the stages of your life, Farm Bureau can help you prepare a strategy to provide security and peace of mind. Find and agent today.
